Originally established in October 1997 as part of the broader Summit development, the community later transitioned into four independent HOAs: Waterford at The Summit (AKA Waterford), The Crossings at The Summit (AKA The Crossings), Sanctuary at The Summit (AKA Sanctuary at The Summit), and The Royal Summit Estates (AKA The Estates or The Summit Estates). Today, The Estates remains a welcoming, close-knit community dedicated to maintaining a safe, attractive, and beautiful environment for all residents. Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, our association focuses on preserving property values, supporting neighborhood standards, and upholding the long-standing quality of life in our subdivision.
Namesakes & A Historic Spelling Error: Both Owensboro and Daviess County were named after Kentucky war heroes who fell at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811—Colonel Abraham Owen and Major Joseph Daveiss. Fun fact: a clerk accidentally flipped the letters in Daveiss' name on official paperwork, permanently sticking us with the unique spelling DAVIESS!
We Used to Be Called "Yellow Banks": Before officially taking the name Owensboro, early riverboat travelers called this spot "Yellow Banks" because of the bright, yellowish clay baked into the riverbanks along the Ohio River.
The Pioneer Named "Smothers": The very first settler to build a cabin here in 1797 was a frontiersman named William Smeathers—who often went by the incredible alias "Bill Smothers."
Lightbulbs That Made Baseball History: A local company in town (Ken-Rad / Kentucky Electrical Lamp Company) manufactured the specialized lightbulbs used to illuminate Major League Baseball's very first night game in 1935!
A Very Specific BBQ Tradition: While most of the country smokes pork or beef, our local barbecue legacy was built on mutton (mature sheep) paired with a vinegar-and-pepper "dip"—a unique culinary tradition brought over by 19th-century Welsh settlers that you can rarely find anywhere else in the U.S.
